Tell us more about the Board of the cafe...

 

Summary of Exempt Purpose/Mission:  (full mission statement here)

  • To encourage the Love of Jesus Christ in and around Mapleton-Fall Creek.
  • To raise the economic, educational, social and spiritual levels of the residents.
  • To foster and promote community-wide interest in the concerns of the residents including sickness, poverty, crime, environmental degradation and racial issues.
  • To expand opportunities for residents to own, manage, and operate businesses, develop entrepreneurial and management skills and to assist in obtaining financial support for business.

    • Billboard lease update.  [Be sure to add something to our tickler-file re renewing/cancelling the lease in 2009?]
    • Financial Report... bottom line = $3,400 needed.
    • Cafe Timeline of Activities (esp. Nov 20 fundraiser, and Dec 5, Lord willing, Einar & Lena return to the neighborhood)
    • Future officers? 
    • Communications?  'Cafe Chatter' (former newsletter, per David Metzger)... and Nick Bolden would be anxious to help.

    • Attendance: David, Esther, Joe, Shawn, Elease, Neil, Bob, Chris.
    • Tres. Report.  Action: FinTeam to convene Oct 19 at Shawn's.... 5pm.
    • Grant-writing?   Shawn's leading... Nita McCormick, Allison King ____, Mary Provence, Natalie Boehm, Sara Blandina,  (who at Raphael)... (Shawn is also headed to CCDA shortly, to workshops.)
    • Re David Scott's status re Inactive Bd Member... The board voted unanimously to remove David from the board.

  • Meeting... Saturday, Sept. 13... 8:00am
    • Attendance, David, Esther, Neil, Joe, and Chris (5 of 9 members constituted a quorum).
    • Motion passed to form a FinTeam comprised of Bob, Neil, Joe, Esther, Elease... to meet this month to help build a budget-proposal.
    • Motion passed to form an Ethics Committee comprised of David Voelker, Joe, Elease and whoever our legal-rep is or will be.

  • Board Function?  Modeling Core Values In The Neighborhood... and making high-level cafe decisions accordingly.

     

    • Fruit of the Spirit is... Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness & Self-Control.
    • Good Communication... and developing our communication skills, even during board meetings.  Attendance, pay attention, listen first, not interupt, respect others, share openly.  (Inquiry... believing that "we only know in part"). 
    • Preparation greatly enhances communication.   (2 hrs/mo meeting must be optimized... by preparing in advance.  "Take captive every thought."  and "Prepare your minds for action.")
    • Vision...  (a future for the Mission... which is.... )

  • The Board Function... 
    • Fiduciary responsibility to ensure the success of the cafe mission.
    • Certain legal responsibilities to the state of Indiana and IRS.
    • Meets monthly... 2nd Saturday of each month.
    • Typically hands-on servants and ongoing advocates for the ministry.

 

 

 

  • The Corporation Assets...
    • Title to the property... (see pdf above)
    • Title to the parking-lot property... (see pdf above)
    • Bank Account -- is under the care and control of the corporate treasurer -- Bob Shaw.
    • Tech Lab Computers -- are owned by the cafe.  (value is nearly $0 though)  Software licenses are owned by the cafe, and administrated by Neil Cox (board member) & Tom McCormick (key tech).  [Note:  The program itself, currently called 'Ask Anything Saturday', was initiated by volunteers who moved the program from another location in Indy.  See full details... Future Agenda Items?

  • Can we get our corporate docs scanned & online?
  • Especially republish our Mission for chronic review.
  • (so we can start determining how we can objectively know if or to what degree we're accomplishing the mission... or not.)
  • Can we get someone to lead re 'employment' portion of the IBJ mission?
  • Per Bob, we need to research and 'book' previous costs to be capitalized on our 'books'.
  • Chris' proposed 'Education' schedule.
  • Nick Bolden (DeVos grad) proposal re youth hiphop Bible studies. Gang initiative and prison population, etc.

  • Grace Place (Dan Gushee) -- Prison-Related housing ministry.
